India’s First Public CPR Kiosk Installed by KIMS

India alone reports around seven lakh cardiac arrests every year from varied causes. And then there are 85% of these cardiac arrests happening outside hospitals like railway stations, homes, bust stops, market places, airports and various recreational facilities. Approximately 90% of the individuals facing these cardiac arrests outside hospitals die because of the lack of proper systems in place.

CPR or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, specifically when performed immediately, can double and even triple the chances of survival of a cardiac arrest victim. Many Hands-Only CPR kiosks have thus been placed at different high-traffic areas like malls, hospitals, railway stations, airports and educational institutes to save the lives of individuals suffering from cardiac arrest outside hospitals.

Such kiosks also play their part in raising awareness about CPR –the lifesaving skill. Coming to the common men, they have the option of learning and practising CPR steps by Sanjivani QCPR KIOSK. This will be quite instrumental when it comes to saving the lives of the victims of cardiac arrest in the near future. It is also one way of creating social awareness about resuscitation skills.

The survival of an individual suffering from cardiac arrest completely depends on whether he or she is able to receive CPR on an immediate basis or not. Studies conducted on the use of Hands-Only CPR show that these skills are quite effective and are the same as the traditional CPR for cardiac arrest in public or at work or home.

Sanjivani QCPR KIOSK is Indian’s very first Public CPR KISOK, installed and even inaugurated on October 16, 2021. The inauguration of the CPR took place at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences or KIMS. It was inaugurated by Brig. Prof. (Dr.) A.P. Mohanty, VSM and Principal at KIMS. This was a special day chosen for the inauguration as it was the eve of “World Restart Heart Day” and “World Anesthesia Day”.

Dr Ashok Kumar Badamali was the man behind conceptualising the idea of the Kiosk. He is a Cardiac Anesthesiologist. His idea was duly supported by KIIT-DU and KIMS. What followed next was the formation of a team of skilled and talented engineers to translate the idea into proprietary and a tangible product for the KIIT-DU. The engineers included in the team were namely Sumit Sah, Bishwajeet Mishra, Subhrajeet Singha Roy, Suwgat Beura, Papun Jena, Rudra, Salman Arshad, Rohit Kumar and Prasant Ranjan of Infiniti Research and Development Pvt. Ltd.

Now, it has become more than convenient for the common men to both learn and practice the CPR lifesaving skills in the KIOSK of the KIMS Hospital. There will be real-time audio-visual feedbacks guiding the practitioners during the CPR. KIMS has done its part in moving a step ahead into its social initiatives by installing the very first public CPR, KIOSK. It has also, in a way, worked towards fulfilling the vision and the mission of its founder, Dr. Achyuta Samanta.

The CPR installation is one of the greatest achievements of not just KIMS but even KIIT and KISS, the organisations that operate under the able supervision of Samanta.
