Everything You Should Know About a Smart Village

A smart village is basically a village where people can get astounded with their visit. Such villages are immensely developed regions with security measures such as CCTV surveillance, use of solar energy and Wi-Fi connectivity. There are a lot of people who baffle around the words Smart Village thinking what it could mean or what it could be actually. But such villages were deemed to come to the notice of the world after the concept of smart cities came in.

A Bit about the Villages Pre-Independence

The urban regions of India have always served as major centres of attraction for different social and political activities.

• Before independence, the villages in India hardly had any opportunity, or they hardly received any attention from any of the sources.

• For the people living in the urban regions, the villages were always considered as places for thatched homes, dirty ponds, cattle, farming and massive open farming fields.

Nevertheless, nothing changed even after independence. It took several years for the urban societies to give a bit of attention to the rural regions of India. The attention today has grown manifold, but still, there are many urban zones that are lagging behind.

The Smart Village Concept

The smart village concept is a fresh and uncomplicated idea of developing the villages of India in a way that they do not lag behind in the facilities and the amenities available to people living in the cities. They speak of:

• Smart Panchayat

• Top class medical services

• Good quality transport communication

• Banking solutions

• Proper sanitisation

• Exclusive education

All in all, these villages have everything that can make a living in such villages a good experience for the people.

About Kalarabank: The First-of-its-Kind Smart Village in India

Developed into a smart village in an exclusive direct development action in India, this village is one of the very first smart villages in the country. The development work for this model village started in 2000 with the initiative taken up by the popular educational businessman, reformer and social activist Dr. Achyuta Samanta.

The initiative that was taken up in the year 2000 took just five to six years to transform Kalarabank into a model village with the large scale development of almost all kinds of modern amenities for health, education, sanitation, environment and communication. At present, the village has been successfully developed into a modern smart village with Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the village and CCTV surveillance covering the whole village, along with the introduction of solar power.

The population of the village is 763 people, among which there are 459 men and 304 women, along with 117 households. The literacy rate of the village is 89.8% which is way higher than the literacy rate of Odisha and even India. The village also has an English medium school and a library too. Tap Drinking Water Project has also been initiated in the village to offer clean tap drinking water to the households of the village.
